| | Orange Bow Knots
1 1/4 cup of scalded milk 1/2 cup of shortening 1/3 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of salt 1 pkg. of dry yeast 2 well beaten eggs 1/4 cup of orange juice 2 tablespoons of orange peel 5 cups of flour
Combine the first 4 ingredients. Cool to lukewarm. Soften yeast in this mixture. Add eggs, juice and peel. Beat thoroughly. Add flour. Mix into soft dough. Let stand 10 minutes. Knead on lightly floured surface. Place in a greased bowl, let rise in warm place (82º) until double, approximately 2 hours. Punch down. Roll dough to 1/2" thickness, cut into 10" strips, 1/2" wide. Knot each strip and arrange bow knots on greased baking sheet. Let rise until double. Bake in hot 400ºF. oven for 15 minutes. Remove and spread with Orange Topping. Makes 2 dozen.
Orange Topping: Blend 2 tablespoons of orange juice, 1 teaspoon of grated orange peel, and 1 cup of sifted confectioner's sugar. If you need more topping, it's easy to improvise! |
