Cake: 1 package (18.25 ounces) of spice cake mix 1 cup of apple juice 1/3 cup of applesauce 3 eggs 1/3 cup of vegetable oil 1 teaspoons of maple flavoring 2 cups cored, unpeeled, and chopped Granny Smith apples (about 2 apples) Topping: 1/2 cup of applesauce 1/3 cup of firmly packed brown sugar 1/4 cup of butter or margarine
Preheat oven to 325ºF. For cake portion, combine cake mix, apple juice, eggs, applesauce, oil, and maple flavoring in a large bowl. Beat at low speed of an electric mixer for 30 seconds. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in apples. Pour batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Place baking dish on a wire rack while making topping. For topping portion, combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium high heat. Stirring frequently, bring to a boil; reduce heat and cook until thickened. Serve warm cake with topping. Serves 12-16.
