Glazed Peach Cake

One 1 pound 13 ounce can of yellow cling peaches, sliced
1/4 cup of butter
1/2 cup of brown sugar, packed
Maraschino cherries
1 cup of sifted flour
1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
3/4 cup of sugar
4 tablespoons of shortening
1/2 cup of milk
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla  

Drain the peach slices. Melt the butter in a deep 8 inch round cake pan. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Arrange the peach slices and cherries on top of sugar. Place the shortening in bowl, stir to soften. Sift in the dry ingredients. Add the milk and vanilla, mix, then beat for 2 minutes. Add the egg and beat for 1 minute. Pour over the peaches. Bake at 350ºF. for 50 to 60 minutes. Allow to stand a few minutes in pan and then turn out on to plate. Beat served warm.
