Holiday Fruit Compote

1/4 cup of Port wine
1 tablespoon of margarine or butter
1 1/4 cups of sugar
1 tablespoon of grated lemon peel
1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg
4 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 cups of fresh cranberries
1/2 cup of chopped pitted dates
1/3 cup of chopped walnuts
sour cream or ice cream



In a slow cooker, combine wine, margarine or butter, sugar, lemon peel and spices. Add apples and cranberries. Cover and cook on LOW 4 - 6 hours. Stir in dates and walnuts. Serve warm or cold with a dollop of sour cream or use as a sauce for ice cream. Makes 40 6 servings
