Brazil Nut Scotchies

1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of shortening
1 tablespoon of molasses
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 egg
1 cup of sifted flour
1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 cup of quick cooking oats
1 cup of chopped Brazil nuts  

Preheat oven to 350ºF.  Cream the  sugar and shortening together in a bowl until light and fluffy. Add the molasses, salt, cinnamon, vanilla, and egg, beat thoroughly. Sift the flour, baking soda,  and baking powder together into separate bowl; add to molasses mixture and mix well. Stir in oats and nuts. Drop by level tablespoons onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes. Makes 3 1/2 dozen
