Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup of butter or margarine
1 cup of sugar
1 egg or 2 egg yolks, beaten
1 tablespoon of milk
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1 1/2 cups of sifted flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
14 teaspoon of salt   

Cream the butter or margarine. Beat in sugar, egg or egg yolks, milk and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt, add to butter mixture. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate 3 to 4 hours or until dough is firm. Heat oven to 375ºF. Roll dough into small balls about 3/4 inch in diameter. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Lighten flatten tops with the bottom of a glass that has been dipped in sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until the cookies are lightly browned around the edges. Transfer to wire racks. Cool. If desired, lightly brush warm cookies with melted butter or margarine and dust with confectioners' sugar. Makes 3 dozen
