Spiced Apples and Beef

2 pounds of beef chuck or round, cut in 1 inch cubes
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups of water
1/4 cup of lemon or lime juice
2 cups of sliced onion
1 1/2 teaspoons of curry powder
1/4 teaspoon each of ground cloves and cinnamon
1 teaspoon of salt
3 cups of peeled tart cooking apples in 1 inch wedges
3/ cup of chopped watermelon pickle, optional
buttered hot cooked rice





Brown beef cubes in the oil in heavy kettle. Add 1 cup water, lemon juice, onion and seasonings. Bring to boil, cover and simmer 40 minutes. Add apple wedges and remaining 1/2 cup of water, mixing gently. Cover and simmer 40 minutes or until meat is tender. Gently mix in pickle, if uses. Serve on rice. Makes 6 servings
