1 1/4 cups of sugar 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons of margarine or butter 2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour 2/3 cup of shortening 6 small apples, pears, or peaches
For syrup, mix 1 cup of the sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 3/4 cups of water. Bring to boiling, reduce heat. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in margarine. For pastry, mix flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Cut in shortening till coarse crumbs form. Add 6 to 8 tablespoons water a little at a time, mixing till moistened. Form into a ball. Roll into an 18x12 inch rectangle, cut into six 6 inch squares. Peel and core apple or pears. For peaches, peel, halve, and pit. Place one fruit on each pastry square. Combine the remaining sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle over fruit. Moisten edges of pastry, fold corners to center atop fruit. Pinch to seal. Place in an 11x7x1 1/2 inch baking pan. Pour syrup over. Bake in 375ºF. oven about 45 minutes or till fruit is tender and pastry is brown. Serve with ice cream, if desired. Serves 6
