Old Fashioned Valentine Sugar Cookies

4 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1 cup of butter or margarine, softened
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup of sour cream
1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
1 egg white
1 tablespoon of water

Decorative Toppings:
Sugar, coarse sugar, red sugar
Colored sprinkles
Red cinnamon candies
Silver dragees
Flaked coconut

Sift flour with baking powder, soda, salt and nutmeg, set aside.
In a large bowl of electric mixer, at medium speed, beat butter, sugar and egg until light and fluffy. At low speed, beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add to flour mixture, beating until well combined. with rubber scraper, form dough into a ball. Wrap in waxed paper or foil, refrigerate several hours or overnight.
Divide dough into 6 equal parts. Refrigerate until ready to roll out. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375ºF. Lightly grease cookie sheets.
On a well floured surface, roll dough, one part at a time, 1/4 inch thick. Draw a large heart pattern on cardboard 7 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Place pattern on rolled out dough and cut around pattern with sharp knife. Slide cookie sheet under cookie. Beat egg white with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush cookies with egg white mixture.
Using cinnamon candies or silver dragees, make mottoes on hearts "Be Mine." "I Love You," "Yours Forever,"  "Eat Your Heart Out," and so on. Sprinkle lightly with sugar, edge with sprinkle of coarse sugar, red sugar, colored sprinkles or coconut. Be imaginative!
Bake about 12 to 14 minutes or until cookie is golden. Let cool one minute on cookie sheet, then carefully slide off cookie sheet onto rack to cool completely. Makes 6 large cookie hearts
