Sweet potatoes and yams are used interchangeably. However in recipes calling for mashed sweet potatoes (such as pies and soufflés), it is preferable to use yams for their finer texture.
For seasoning mashed sweet potatoes, add few chopped walnuts sautéed in little butter, or add sprinkling of powdered nutmeg or cinnamon, or add little crushed pineapple. Decide on which seasoning in relation to other foods on menu.
Microwave Sweet Potatoes: 2 sweet potatoes, paper towels - Place the sweet potatoes on a paper towel. Pierce with a fork. Microwave on HIGH for about 15 minutes or until tender. Serve with yogurt and honey and a sprinkling of nutmeg. Serves 4
